Adaptive Karate Programs
Through the Seido Juku Benefit Foundation, a 501(c) non-profit organization, Seido Karate strives to share the mental, physical, and spiritual benefits of karate with physically challenged or disadvantaged populations. The Seido Juku Benefit Foundation provides financial support and instruction to students who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, homeless, or have special needs, and supports many local community programs, including those benefiting children with HIV/AIDS, victims of breast cancer, at-risk teenagers, and the homeless.
YAI KARATE PROGRAM
Seido Karate has partnered with the Young Adult Institute (YAI) organization for over 30 years to provide a safe and welcoming space for neurodivergent adults to practice karate. The students have a deep appreciation for their teachers and are sincerely grateful for the opportunity to study at Seido. The class syllabus is adapted from the Seido course curriculum. Promotion is based on students' dedication, spirit and attendance as much as mastery of technique and material.
For further information about the YAI program in the city, and how to become part of this special adaptive karate class please contact YAI directly: communications@yai.org, 212-273-6182, and yai.org
BLIND KARATE PROGRAM
Seido Karate’s Blind Program is one of our adaptive martial arts classes, designed specifically for blind and visually impaired students. Rooted in the belief that karate is for everyone, this program emphasizes body awareness, balance, and technique through sensory-focused instruction. Students are guided in developing spatial perception, touch-based feedback, and auditory cues to refine their movements and deepen their martial arts practice. Through individualized support and a strong sense of community, visually impaired students are empowered to train confidently and progress through the ranks alongside their peers.
As part of our inclusive approach, promotion candidates and sighted students may train alongside blind and visually impaired classmates. They are taught respectful and effective methods of assistance, learning both martial arts protocol and practical skills for supporting blind individuals inside and outside the dojo. This collaborative environment fosters empathy, leadership, and a deeper understanding of martial arts as a practice that transcends physical limitations.
