Beach Training

Updated: August 2, 2007
Seido's annual beach training is a fun way for all students across all dojos
to get together and train outdoors. Try to hold a stance against a wave, or
do pushups while your senpais pile sand on your back. After beach training,
students and their friends and families play volleyball, frisbee, and sunbathe!

| By subway: -Take the A train to Rockaway Park Beach 116th St, which is last stop on the A line. Depending on where you live, the subway route may take the longest. - Please be advised that due to the early beach training start time and the sporadic nature of subway performance during non-peak weekend hours, students taking the subway are advised to travel in groups. By the time beach training is over, subway service is more frequent. - Students taking the subway must be also be advised the A train has 2 different end destinations (the line splits at the Broad Channel station). The Rockaway Park 116th Beach St is the correct end destination for beach training. [The other destination, "Far Rockaway Mott Ave", is at the opposite end of the Rockaway Peninsula.] See the map below for the right route. |

What to wear |
- Wear a bathing suit under your gi, as
you will be in the water in full uniform. - Unless you want to change clothes in your car or on the bus, it's advised that you show up in uniform. Bathrooms on the beach are not guaranteed to be open. The closest diner is a bit of a walk. - Bring clothes to change into afterwards. Special Note: Pleas be advised that after you return home from beach training, it is recommended you submerge your belt in a bucket of water overnight to remove seawater which will have been absorbed and, if left unrinsed, will cause your belt to stink very, very badly!! You don't have to wash your belt with soap; simply soak it. |
What to bring |
- Towels, beach blankets, beach chairs,
tents, umbrellas, coolers with ice, fruit, water, & snacks. - Toilet paper. There are public restrooms at Rockaway Park Beach, but early in the morning before training starts, they may not yet be open and conditions are unpredictable. There are diners with restrooms nearby, but before training starts, most shops and businesses in the area are closed. - You can train in the water with your glasses or sunglasses, but don't forget to bring a cord to keep your glasses around your neck. Sunglasses get lost every year! - Plastic bags to carry your wet/damp gi back home in. - A stick or pole to hang your gi on to dry after training is over. - SUNSCREEN! |
