Locations & Times
Updated January 31, 2006The Young Adult Institute (YAI)
is a health and human services agency serving people with various mental and
learning disabilities. Programs and classes are provided to help these individuals
integrate into their community.
Seido karate has been part of the YAI evening program curriculum for the past twenty years. Approximately eighteen students train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 and follow belt level material, stretches, warm ups and games. The YAI students are very enthusiastic about their karate and are known for their strong spirit and loud kiais.
A number of special events throughout the year give this group goals to work toward and visits by Kaicho and out of town Seido members are always a special treat. Some of these events include the YAI demonstration given at the benefit tournament every October, YAI promotions in June, YAI "showcase" for family and friends of the students and the yearly visit to Honbu where students meet with Kaicho and participate in the Friday evening class.
YAI students are also known for being serious and dedicated. Some have been
training for a decade and more. Billy Thompson was the first YAI student to
attain the level of Black Belt after training for thirteen years. Others are
following in Billy's footsteps and are working slowly but steadily at their
karate, embodying Kaicho's motto "technique over strength, spirit over technique".

Students have widely varied levels of capability and disability. It is for this reason that the program works best with a high teacher to student ratio. Teaching assistants are always needed and welcome.
